Polytechnic to University: How GPA Admission Works

Polytechnic graduates applying to NUS, NTU, and SMU are assessed primarily on their cumulative GPA, which is scored on a 4.0 scale. Unlike A-Level applicants who are evaluated on rank points, polytechnic applicants are assessed holistically, with GPA being the most significant factor. Each university publishes Indicative Grade Profiles (IGP) for polytechnic applicants separately from A-Level applicants, showing the 10th and 90th percentile GPA of admitted polytechnic students.

The polytechnic pathway is a major route into local universities. Every year, many polytechnic graduates are admitted to NUS, NTU, and SMU across all kinds of programmes. Some courses, particularly in applied fields like engineering and computing, actively recruit polytechnic graduates and may offer module exemptions or advanced placement based on relevant diploma qualifications.

How GPA Requirements Differ from A-Level IGP

While A-Level IGP is reported as grade combinations (such as AAA/A or ABB/B), polytechnic IGP is reported as a numerical GPA on a 4.0 scale. A higher GPA indicates stronger academic performance. The 10th percentile GPA marks the boundary of the lowest 10% of admitted polytechnic students - about 90% of admitted students had a higher GPA, and some were admitted at or below it. If your GPA meets or exceeds this figure, you have a reasonable chance of admission.

Keep in mind that polytechnic GPA requirements can differ a lot from A-Level requirements for the same course. A programme that is highly competitive for A-Level students may be more accessible for polytechnic graduates, and vice versa. This is because the two admission tracks draw from different applicant pools and may have different intake quotas.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Use the GPA slider above to set your current or expected cumulative GPA.
  2. The tool instantly shows which courses you are eligible for based on the latest published polytechnic IGP data from NUS, NTU, and SMU.
  3. Courses are organised by university, with the most competitive programmes listed first. You can toggle between showing all courses or only those where your GPA meets the 10th percentile requirement.
  4. Click on any course to view its full profile, including employment data, salary statistics, and historical trends.

Additional Admission Factors

While GPA is the primary criterion, universities may also consider the relevance of your polytechnic diploma to the applied course, co-curricular achievements, work experience, and performance at interviews or aptitude tests. Certain competitive programmes such as Medicine, Law, and Dentistry have additional selection criteria beyond GPA. Applicants are encouraged to check the specific admissions requirements on each university's website.

For A-Level students, use the A-Level Rank Point Calculator instead. For a full overview of all admission pathways, see our admissions guide.
